THE LATE MR. J.C W. AITKEN

The following motion was passed in silence at last night's meeting of the Wellington Harbour Board: —"TJiat the Wellington Harbour Board has received with deep regret the newa of the death of Mr. J. G. W. Aitken, who was, from December, 1899, to April, 1905, a valued member of the board. The board desires to express its sincere sympathy with the deceased gentleman's relatives in their bereavement, and also to place on record its appreciation of the many estimable personal virtues of the late Mr,. Aitken, and of the great value of his public services as a citizen of Wellington and member of the Legislature." The Chairman (Mr.J. G. Harkness) said that undoubtedly a notable figure had dropped out of the life of the city. In his private capacity Mr. Aitken had been a living example of an uprightness and integrity difficult to emulate. As a public man he had rendered signal service. Reference to the connection of the late Mr. J. G. W. Aitken with the Society i for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals was made by Mr. F. ' Meadowcroft at Monday's meeting of the committee of the society. Mr. Aitken was the society's first president in 1893, and was president also in five other years. At the time of his death he was a vice-president. A resolution "was passed recording the committee's deep appreciation of the services of the late Mr. Aitken to the society.
