PROTEST AGAINST YOUNG MAN'S

ARREST.

A l.strong protect against the airest o£ a young man. named John William Alterater on a charge of attempting- to leave New Zealand with the intention of failing- to make adequate provision for his wife and unborn child, was entered in the Magistrate's Court to-day by Mr. J. S. .Hanna. Messrs. I. Salekand J. B. Teasdale were on the bench, and Mr. J. Wiren, appeared for the accused's wife. „j After Alterater had been oharged, Mr. Henna said: "I have nevor heard of a more outrageous proceeding. That this ■young man, who is in the constant employ of the Government, should be arrested and placed in the dock is most outrageous. There was not the slightest intention on his part to leave New Zealand." Mr. W"'en : "The warrant for the man's arrest was issued by a Magistrate at Wellington. The accused comes Trom Aus: tralia, and last week a letter was received stating that as the accused wa6 shortly leaving for Australia^ it. would not be necessary to send certain goods here. On Wednesday last Alterater told his wife to leave the : boardinghouso at which they were staying and go back to her people. This she did. Oh Thursday his wife was informed that Alterater had been dismiss-' ed from the Railway Department." Mr. Hanna: "Who told her that?" Mr. Wiren: "That I could not say. The wife, I might explain, does not wish to. proceed with this information, but intends to proceed against the man for maintenance." Mr Salek: "I think you had better make this explanation to the Magistrate. The case is beyond our jurisdiction." Mr. Wiren: "In that case I will?apply for a- remand." Mr. Hanna: "I- would suggest that he should bo released on his own recognisance." Mr. Wiren: "I will ask. for a surety. We are afraid ho might disappear again." Mr. Hanna: "Oh, nonsense, The nian's in constant employment' in Wellington." Tho Bench decided to remand the accused until Monday and find bail at one surety of £25.
