A PRONOUNCEMENT WANTED.

The, Westland Branch of the Canterbury Progress League carried the following motion last night: "That in view of the appalling social, conditions existing, in Ghnstchurch owing to the shortage of housing, accommodation as disclosed, by a, deputation from the. Ladies' Social Welfare Guild, which waited on the Canterbury members of Parliament oh. the 6th instant, and in view of the t increasing unemployment in • timber industry on the Coast, the Executive of the League urges upon the Board of Trade tho advisability of making some pronouncement respecting tho prospects of any fluctuation, in the price of timber, as disclosed by the recent investigation of the cost of production on tho Coast,, and the branch conskiorß tha* the Board, of Trade should be asked either to exercise its powers in readjusting prices of timber, if such an unwarrantably high, or.' make such pronouncement as would assure prospective builders that some stability of the value of houses may be counted upon " In the course of the discussion it was stated that July.orders for timbers showed that only 25 per cent, of the normal output was required. It was also stated that unemployment is now beginning to be keenly felt, and that the industry here was only at the beginning of a very severe strain.

In addition to a grant of £500 worth of postage stamps per annum to the Advisory Board of- the Patriotic Societies, tho correspondence of all such societies has beem paid from Consolidated P^evenue The Minister ,of Internal Affairs hae sought information as to how. much longer such a liberal grant, should continue, and has asked the board to consider t& what extent the present concession should be limited. At yesterday's mest/ng the board was of opinion that the present grant should, be continued, but it decided to request patriotic societies to economise to the fullest extent.

Mr. Vivian H. K. Deacon, who is conducting a series of lectures at the Town Hall (Concert Chamber) on Sunday, evenings, is also commencing- a series of weeknight lectures, on "Modern Psychology." Last Sunday evening nbout 220 persons attended his lecture and seemed keenly interested in tho problems dealt with. Mr. Deacon, who is a cousin of .the late poet, Robert Browning, is the author of several works on "Psychology" and has lectured for the AV.E.A. on that subject. His lecture to-night should thus prove of special interest, as it deals with "The Power of Will."
