ECONOMIES BOARD
No information which can be made public has yet been received by the Government from the Economies Board, which was appointed early this year to consider means whereby the departmental expenditure in the Civil Service' might be reduced without reducing efficiency. The board has now been at work for some months, and the heads of Departments, who constitute it, have given much timetoinquiries. Before the major recommendations of the board can be given effect to, they will require to be thoroughly considered by Cabinet, and it may be that Parliamentary sanction of some of the proposals will also be required. Of course, there are many directions in which economies can be introduced at once, such as in reducing the unnecessary use of motor-cars, and it is believed that much has already been done in this way., ; .;:.,"■■.
