At Trentham he : finished down the course in th© Stewards' Handicap on the opening day, and won the Liverpool Handicap on the second day. A. Orrell, who arrived from Sydney by the Ulimaroa on Sunday under engagement to Mr. W. R. Kemball, the well-known Wairarapa owner, is a wellknown Australian jockey. He can go to scale at about -7.10, so that when lie is not carrying Mr. Kemball's colours he should have no,difficulty in getting mounts from other owners. Last season Orrell went under engagement to India, whore he rode successfully, at Poona, Bombay, Calcutta, and Colombo. He was offered a big inducement to stay there another season, but the climate did not agree with him, and lie decided to return to Australia. He also liacl an offer to ride for a big owner in England. He has ridden successfully in the Newcastle area, where he won tho I Cup—now a £1000 stake—on • Duke Alwynne and .Red .Cardinal... He has also saluted the judge on numerous occasions at Randwick, where he won the Winter Stakes on Carbern, and, other races. _ He will make his first appearance in Mr. Kemball's colours at Marton next month. -• ■ ■ • Owners and trainers axe finally reminded that nominations - for the Marton Jockey Club and Rangitikei Hunt Club's Meeting ' closei ■/to-night at 9 o'clock with Mr. Arthur Way (secretary). Mr. Harold Brown^ yrho wag among the North Island visitors at the Grand National Meeting, is reducing bis team. He informs me that he has -sold Counter Attack to Mr. A. Smith, of Greymouth, and has leased Demades, Loyal Arch, and Going Up. Gazomp, winner of the Australian Steeplechase at Caolfield on Saturday last, was also successful in the Moondaii Steeplechase on the same course a week previously. Gazomp also defeated Wboloo and Doiran, placegetters in both the V.R.C. Grand National and Australian Steeplechase/ in the Godfrey Watson Steeplechase at Caulfield jn July. Gazomp is a sbr-year-old gelding by Gunner from Guess, and hails from the Rtverina district. i According to the Sydney writer, " Pilot," Gloaming has done a lot of sprint work since his arrival in Sydney, and his best effort was on the 6tn inst. on the middle grass track. He had at least 8.10 in sight, and, conceding Cupidon several lengths' start, beat him two lengths in lmin 15|sec for six furlongs. At least half a dozen timed him, ami the worst shown by any watch was lmin 16sec. My own returned lmin 15fsec, and Gloaming's trainer also took him about that. -As the hurdles were out about 10ft from the inner rail, it was a smart bit of Rall6ping, and,'with ordinary luck, R. J. Mason will have Gloaming at his best for the Cholmsford Stakes. Cupidon had a much lighter weight than Gloaming, but did not acquit himself badly, hanging on gamely after the latter passed him at the straight entrance. The Chelmsford .Stakes will be run at Randwick on 10th September. Sasanof and Gloaming both won the race on their first appearance in Australia.
