(•T TIIiIQRAPB.—SPECIAL TO Till POST.) OTAKI, This Day. The death occurred at Otaki on Saturday afternoon of Mrs. B. Winteringham, aged 72 years. Deceased suffered a, stroke a fortnight ago. A meeting was held on Monday night in connection with the proposed establishment of a St. Helens Home at Palmeraton, and it was decided to ask the ladies to co-operate and canvass for subscriptions. A movement is on fjiot to secure a. maternity ward at the Otaki Hospital, and the sum of £120 has already been subscribed. . The estimated , debit balance at the end of the year in 'connection with the Borough Council is £1291, against £650, plus £500 (due to Mr. Brown), or £1150 for last year. This increase is accounted for by several heavy payments peculiar to this year. The main items were: Palmerston North Hospital Board levy of £143 12s; two years' payments are also due to the Horowbenua -County Council, amounting to £208; this previously was ( £l4l per annum. It is also expectediJ that the amount due to Mr. Reardon, £140 (for professional services), will be paid off during the present financial year. On the streets £1300 was expended; this is £400 more than was spent last year. The sum of £150 has been placed on the estimates for lighting. " ".■■.■■■ The receipts from rates are increased this year owing, to enhanced valuation, but the council decided not to] strike, the full rate of 2Jd for general, nor the hospital and lighting irate, which it has power to do. It proposes to strike the same general rate as last year.
