REMOVING DANGER
CENTRE TRAMWAY POLES.' /
Whon the tramway system was first laid down in Wellington, th© poles tp carry, the overhead wires wero placed between tho two seta of tram, vails on lines where double tracks were in use." Later on, it came to bo recognised that the existence of the standards in the middle of the roadway was a danger to the public, consequently some of them, notably those in Courtenay-pkee, were removed, and the overhead wires were suspended from poles fixed at oach side of the thoroughfare. In Riddiford-street the standards were allowed to remain between the tram tracks, but an alteration is now being made. Poles have been erected on the edge of the kerb on each side of Riddiford-street, south of John-street corner, and it is intended to swing the overhead wires from those and do away with the'polos in the middle of tho roadway. Similar work remains to bo carried out in other parts of tho city, but the difficulty facing the tramway authorities in, this respect is that of finance. Centre poles still stand along a considerable section of the tram track in Lambton-quay, but' it is doubtful whether it will bo possible to dismantle them all. Somo portions of Ltimb-ton-quay are so wide that it is feared that tho overhead wires would sag, and therefore give trouble, were they suspended from cither side of the thoroughfare. It is possible, however, that certain of tho centre poles on the Quay will be dono away with, arid this matter is under consideration.
