AUSTRALIA v. KENT

GOOD STAND BY BICKMORE AND

HARDINGE

AN IRONICAL CROWD.

(CHUM MUSS ASSOCIATION.—OOHIUMI.)

(AUSTRALIAN-NEW ZEALAND CABLE ASSOCIATION.)

(Received August ;3, 11 a.m.)

LONDON, 12th August.

For the continuation of the match against Kent the weather was glorious and the wicket fast. Bickmore and Hardinge, the not-out men, resumed to the bowling of Gregory and M'Donald, runs coming freely, though Bickmore was responsible for lucky snicks off M'Donald, and should have been caught by Carter when he was 31. Gregory also missed him at first slip. M'Donald bowled an excellent length, the ball rising, but Bickmore's height neutralised matters. Bickmore reached his half century in eighty-five minutes, despatching M'Donald for three fours in one over, and Armstrong for two fours in another. Ryder relieved M'Donald at 96, and continual changes were made in the field to check the brisk scoring. The century was added in sevency minutes; Mailey relieved Armstrong, and he and Ryder steadied-tHe scoring with the-,off theory. Hardinge reached his: fifty after batting an hour and a-half. \He then lost Bickmore, who returned one to Mailey. The retiring batsman hit seventeen fours, and gave a fine all-round display. He was, warmly applauded. Tho partnership realised 154, the highest of the tour. $hree for 174. "

Hardinge played Ryder on when he was 74. At times he was brilliant. He played correct cricket, and did not make one mistake. He notched seven fours;.

Woolley and Hedges were associated at luncheon, the board showing four for 190. v Before resuming Armstrong placed a wreath at the base of the fountain memorial to Colin Blythe, who was killed in action in 1917," as a tribate from the Australians.

Mailey and Ryder attacked in dull weather, the latter securing Woolley's wicket with his first ball, leg-before. Carter stumped Bryan early, and Hedges quickly followed, caught by Collins off Ryder. Troughton and Wood then faced Ryder and Mailey, Wood scoring freely. The other batsmen offered little resistance. When he was 31, Mailey clean Bowled Wood, terminating the innings. The list six wicketsi fell for 55 runs.

Collins and Pellew opened Australia's < second innings to Cornwallis and Bryan. It was remarked that the' visitors had not approached Kent to reduce the match to two days as in the case of Warwickshire and Yorkshire. There was ironical applause after each delivery in the first two overs. Troughton addressed the noisy section of the crowd. Pellew, Mayne, and Mailey fell cheaply, the score standing at three for 67 at tea —Collins 47. On resuming, Collins and Ryder added nine, each, and then theformer was bowled by Hardinge. Ryder played out time'with Armstrong, and the match was drawnReplying to criticism, Armstrong said he was perfectly justified in riot declaring the first innings. He was there to make th^e whole tour a success, and not 'one particular match. KENT. First Innings.^J.
