ASSOCIATION

MEETING Of N.Z. COUNCIL

A meeting of the New Zealand council of the New Zealand Football Association was held last evening. Mi. 0. E. Ford'ham was in the chair.

Tlifei-e wae considerable discussion following a request made by tho Wanganui Association that the Nortk-South Island match should be played, at Wanganui oii 3rd September, and it was- decided that that suggestion was impracticable, as the Wellington-Auckland Brown Shield match has been set down for that date. The council decided tb ask the Weffingkm Association if it toou'ld" arrange a date and ground, and, failing that, the Wanganui Association is to be offered 10th or i7<th September, if arxabgelriente can be completed for the match. Messrs. A. Williams and.. W. Bagnie were appointed selectors for the North Island, . and P. A, Cornish and J. C. Cameron for the South. A recommendation was made that as far as possible preference should be given to young players. The Canterbury Football Association advised that lasft Saturday two senior teatta had agreed ript to play because it was showing, though the tefe^ee had declared the gjourid fit for play. An opinion was asked as to what punishment ahtnlld be meted out. It Was decided to inform the Canterbury Association that the referee's action, was cortedt, ilnd iniiSt be Upheld; and that the opinion was held that the match, should b"e considered as having been played and no points wo,n by either side; further, the team should be censured.

An appeal was received from the Thorndon Club, Wellington, against the Wellington Football Association's decision in deedding tb replay the .uiorndonWelliftgtdn Gas Company match owing to their considering that the fefefee had made a mistake in. law.

llid facts of the case Ware that Thorndon beat Wellirigtoit Gas Company on- 4i badly-niarketi ground bjr 3 goals to 2. Both teams had, agreed to play under the conditions, but the Wellington Gas Company afterwards protested owing' to the. referee awarding a penalty against them on an unmarked ground. They also asked whether a referee could throw down after an alleged case of handling. Tne Wellington Football Association decided ' that in the latter case the ref ef cc should have awarded a penalty, and accordingly ordered the ■ rn^toh. to be replayed. The Thorndoii Club appealed on the grounds that the refaree was the sole judge as to whether a penalty should be awarded pt not. '

It was decided that the claim by the Ga6 Company's team for a. penalty to be dasallbwed was not valid, and in the Second point, as the referee decided that the "hands" was unintentional the council must uphold his decision. The appeal Of the Thorndon Cltib Was, therefore, Upheld, and the match remainis a win for Thorndon.
