I An interesting series pL lectures and ■ demonstrations, by specialists in horticoUare, has been given under the auspices of St. Thomas's Horticultural Society (Newtown) during the winter months. In June, a comprehensive paper on rose culture, followed by a demonstration on rose pruning, was given by Mr. J- G. Mackenzie, Director of Parks and Reserves. For the month of July Mr. J.J. Kerslake, who is.well known as a very successful exhibitor of chrysanthemums, prepared an interesting paper > on chrysanthemum culture, and gave a brief history of this flower,, from its first importation from China and Japan to tho present day. Instruction was given to members showing how to obtain the wonderful results seen at the recent exhibition in Newtown. Mr. Korslake presented his paper to the society for the nse of the members, and answered many questions put to him. At the close of his lecture Mr. Kerslake was accorded a very hearty vote of thanks, and the hope was expressed that members would benefit by these lectures; so willingly given by horticultural enthuiasts. St. Peters-Schoolroom was again the scene of a large and cheerful gathering last night, when the^ Wellington Ladi«' Hockey Association held its annual dance. Hockey emblems were added to other decorations of lycopodium, streamers of dub colours, . flowers, and . pot plants, and the-effect was very .charming. ,-The attendance was large, and many pTetty frocks were worn. The chaperones were Mesdames Williams, Edwards, and Griffin, and the committee comprised Mrs. Hatching, Misees Dick, K. Skinner, Yoreten, Gell. Duley, Johneton, Messrs. Tandy,.' JSdwandi, Manning, Foster, Sfartin, and GTiffith-s. Mij=s li. A. Skinner' was the hon secretary. The girt are \to be congratulated on a very successful dance. Mr. Gill presided at the monthly meeting of the committee of the Alexandra Home. Accounts amounting to £78 7s Id were passed for payment. The Alexandra Home lias received aibequest of £10 under the will of the late Mrs. Hales, of Oriental Bay. -That people should think of benefiting charitable institutions in this way was commented on as most helpful and encouraging to those who have to administer them. The matron reported that there were eleven infants and 16 adults at present in the home, and that there had been twelve confinements 'during the month. Eleven district cases were attended. The following gifts to the home arc acknowledged with thanks:—Mrs. G. G. Hunter, dripping; Mrs. G. A. Wilton, baby clothes; also the following contributions to the Greenwood Memorial: Miss D. Ferguson, £5; Mr: S., Gilmer, £1 Is. The marriage, of Miss Hone Elder, second daughter of Mrs. Austin Elder, of Aurora-terrace, and the late Mr. Austin Elder, of the Wairarapa, to Mr. John'.W; Downey, of Lattin Point, Bay of Plenty, son of Mr. and Mrs. J. Downey, of Opotiki, took place at St. Paul's Pro-Cathedral.'yesterday afternoon, when the ceremony was performed by the Yen Archdeacon Johnson. Mr. Paul Elder, brother of; the bride, gave her away. Her frock was a charming one of vieux rose satin cloth, with collar, cuffs, • and girdle of fawn colour. Her black straw hat was trimmed with shaded fruit and a blue ribbon bow. The wedding bouquet, was of pink carnations, sweet peas, cyclamen, and maiden hair fern, fastened with long pink tnlle streamers. Captain A. Williams, D.5.0., was the best, man. Miss/Alison 'Elder was in pearl' grey crepe de chine, with a jumper bodice embroidered in blue and an "accordeon-pleated skirt, her hat being of grey and blue to match. Mrs. Elder entertained; a few intimate friends at, her residence, jn Aurora-terrace, where the rooms were beautifully- decorated with spring, flowers.' The bridegroom, best man, and the'bride's brother were all on active service during the war. The members of St. Thomas's Social Club, encouraged by, the great success of" last year's function, will hold "a plain and fancy dress dance on 24th August, when prizes, will bo given for the most original and best fancy costumes for both ladies and gentlemen, the winners to be selected by appointed judges. Those who wish to spend an exceptionally pleasant Saturday afternoon, and help,.the Presidential NuTsery Fund as well, can do co by attending the concert which is being arranged 'by Mr. Leo Buckeridje, and which will open at the Kelburn Kiosk at 3 o'clock. The music will be of the best, Mr Buckeridge, and, Mr. and Mars. Natusch will sing, Mrs. Natusch will be at the piano, and Mr. Vernon Oswin will recite. Afternoon tea will be served, and, with the beautiful prospect to be viewed at Koliburn, the occasion should be a most enjoyable one. At this week's meeting of the Hospital Board at Palmerston North, Nurse Donovan was appointed district nurac at Wailcanae as from Ist September. The fact that the natural direction in nvhich Wellington is likely to spread is' towards the Hutt Valley was emphasised by Mr. Leigh Hunt at a meeting of the Women's Town-planning Committoe, held/in the Dominion Fanners' Institute. Mr. Hunt gave an interesting talk about further plans, and showed those present a map of Mason's Gardons, which it is still hoped may be saved as a park for the recreation and pleasure of Wellington citizens. Miss Hoiißhton, who has hold the position of hostel secretary of the Whangarei Young Women's Christian Association for the last ten months, was entertained by the girls of the hostel and by the members of the board of directors on the eve of her departure from there. Miss Houghton has now been appointed hostel secretary of the new Y.W.C.A. hostel which is to be opened in New | Plymouth, early next month.
