TRIAL RUN ON CITY'S NEW

PLANT

The erection behind the Destructor of the Ransome tar, macadam, and asphalt mixer has now been completed b^ the City Council, and during a trial run this week the new plant gave every satis-: faction. It is the policy of the City Council to treat several city thoroughfares with tar-macadam, thus giving a .much more permanent surface than is secured with wasteful water-bound macadam. It has n»t yet been definitely decided, which streets will be tackled first, but it seems likely that the square.in front of the Lambton Railway Station, Dixon-street, and, perhaps, Featherston-street, will receive preference. Only the best class of Ngahauranga metal will be used, and as this will not be available until the improvements to the Ngahauranga quarry aro completed, nothing can be done in the nuantimej City councillors paid a visit to Ngahauranga this morning and were much impressed by the nature of ths work going on there. Ttie scheme, which has already been fully described in The Post, will'be finished inside two months, and that will bring the council into the correct season for undertaking tarred macadam work. The City" Engineer may decide to utilise some of the best.of the Maranui metal, with the idea of treating the rcids on the Te Aro reclamation in the vicinity of the mixing plant. The Ransome plant dries the metal first and heats it to the proper temperature for mixing with tar. The tarred metal is taken out hot and is placed on the roads before it cools. A special type of steam-roller has been imported for the rolling work.
