BURGLARS BUSY

■ Burglars are doing a good business in' Wellington at the present time, and they are extending their operations from business premises to private houses. It is stated that a wave of crime is prevalent just now —not an uncommon thing during a time of depression. are advised to lock up their houses when they go out, and see that all windows are securely fastened. Police officials express the opinion that some people are merely inviting intruders to enter their residences by leaving door keys in accessible positions. Tho practice of leaving keys "under the mat " is one that should be discontinued in the interests of safety. Within the past few days a serious case of burglary has been reported from Wadestown, a dwelling having been entered in the absence of the occupant and over £200 worth of jewellery stolen. In Macfarlane-street the house of a Government employee was also burgled and various articles and sums of money were abstracted. Many minor cases of burglary have come under the notice of the police, who are exercising all the vigilance possible, but they look to the members of the general public to exercise due care themselves to see that their property is protected. .
