PRODUCE PRICES

ONIONS AND TRANSPORT.

Potatoes should be cheap, for they are not giving an adequate return to South Island growers at to-day's average price of 50a per ton, free on' board South Island ports. New Zealand onion supplies are exhausted. The market, however, is fairly supplied with Victorian, which: are mainly brown Spanish, in good condition. They aro purchasable .in Melbourne at-£3 to £3 10s per ton; but with duty, freight, harbour improvement rate, wharfage, handling, , and . other chargoa, they are brought up to about £7 10s, the costs connected .with bringing them over being one and a'-half times more than the onions themselves. Fair quantities of oats having been shipped to England, the, local market is lather strong for prompt delivery. Most of the oats that have gone Home should reach a satisfactory market. Fowl wheat is very scarce. Fair quantities of maize are arriving from Australia.
