VICE-REGAL.

The Governor-General (Lord Jellkoe) paid his first official visit to Ashbiirfcon and Methven yesterday. He was enthusiastically received, brilliant weather favouring the civic functions in both centres. ■

The Hon. W,, Nosworthy, Minister ot Agriculture, is duo back in Wellington from the South Island to-morrow.

The Hon. J. O. Coates, Minister, of Public Works and Postmaster-General, left for the North yesterday. He will be away from Wellington, for about ten days. • .

Mr. Maughan Barnett, City .Organist at Auckland, is in Wellington.

Mr. J. H. Finney, of Nelson, is on a visit to' Wellington.

Sub-Inspector Willis, who has been transferred to Dunedin, left Wellington last evening.

Mr. William Souness, J.P., an old Pahiatua resident, died last week, aged 73. He was formerly Town Clerk at Pongaroa. , •

The death took place in Masterton on Sunday of Mrs. Hugh Campbell, an old Wairarapa settler, who was born at Wellington in 1841. She leaves a large family. . '

Captain Mundy, A.D.O. to His Excellency ' the Governor-General, who has been spending a week at Gisborne, has returned to Wellington.

Mr. Peter Alston Macomish, divisional accountant in the Public Trust Office, Wellington, has been transferred to Masterton as district accountant.

Mr. Herbert J. Smith, general manager for New Zealand for the Phoenix Assurance Company, leaves to-day by the-Manuka for Sydney. Mr. Smith will,be absent for about a month.

Mr. George Williamß, who died at Sandon on Sunday, aged 87 years, came to New Zealand in 1865. He settled first at Lower Hutt, going to Sandon in 1873, and was one ot the founders of the district as well as' the'first schoolmaster there.
