AUSTRALIA v. WARWICKSHIRE

RAIN STOPS PLAY

The Australian cricketers opened their match with Warwickshire to-day. The Warwickshire team, is as follows:— Botherham, Holdsworth, Fiddian-Green Partridge, Cross, Quaife, Charlesworth, Howell, Bates, Smart, Scorer. Hendry, Carter, Mailey, and Mayne were omitted from the Australian side.

The weather was bright and cool, but the wicket was wet. iiotherham won the toss. Bates and Fiddian-Greeri opened to the bowling of M'Donald and Armstrong. Fiddian-Green, was out in the fifth over. M'Donald was bowling a 'little above medium pace, with an occasional fast ball.' The play was characterised by some good drives. Charlesworth, when at 7, returned, a hard one to Armstrong, who dropped it. A run later Andrews missed Bates, who made some good shots before Armstrong drove back his wicket.

The weather was now threatening. Quaife was bowled by Armstrong when at 2, the ball going right through instead of turning. Holdsworth was then caught and bowled by Armstrong, making the score four for 42. At this point j rain stopped play. "/ On the resumption, Scorer hit Gregory to the leg boundary, and then gave a difficult chance to Collins at slip off Gregory. , Charlesworth- jumped out and drove Armstrong for 6, and again delighted the crowd by driving Gregory" to the on boundary. Many of his runs were got by late cutting. In seventy-five minutes he reached 50 out of the -63 . scored. Finnlly he was caught at backward point. He hit a sixer and five 4's.
