HOROWHENUA V. MANAWATU

A DEAWN GAME.

(»T TBLBGR.^PH.— SPECIAL TO TH» POST.) /

PALMERSTON N., 6th August. The return m?«ch between the above representative teams was played on the Showgrounds, Palmerston North, on Saturday last, before about 2000 spectators. Owing to the recent rains, the ground was in a' very slippery condition, and, taking this into consideration, both teams are to be congratulated ;on the class of football shown. The passing of the rear divisions was very creditable. On the day Manwatu were the better side, and were unlucky in not gaining the deciding points. The opening stages were marked by successive attacks of the home team, Eglinton, Duston, Leader, and Swanson being noticeable, good defensive work on the part of Ford, M'Donald, and N. Winiatal staving off a score. Jacob eventaully set the visitors on the attack, and from a line-out on the home team's twenty-five, the visiting forwards instituted a dribbling rush, which ended in Broughton scoring. The kick at goal failed. 3—o. A promising opening made by Mair (Manawatu) gave the home team a chance to register, but a timely mark by Reid saved the situation. At half-time there was no further score.

On resuming, the home forwards set up a vigorous attack, and, utilising good smothering tactics, had the opposing rearguard hard on defence. A nice cross-kick by Callender was accepted by Harkness, who in turn shortpunted over Marshall's head, and Leader, who was following up fast, beat the visiting full-back for the ball, and scored. The kick at goal failed. 3—-3. For the remainder of the game the home team held the supremacy, but at the call of time there was no alteration in the score. Mr. J. B. Proud had charge of the game. During the progress of the game JY.

Dustin, the Manawatu captain, had to retire owing to an injury to his wrist. He was replaced by Galpin.
