"Not a Beginner" writes to Tho Post:'" "A groat deal of^ appreciation has been expressed of the fine sporting spirit of Wellingtonians, but from my experience this does not seem to apply to one section of the Wellington sports, and in this I refer to some of the golf players. By their own actions a number of these people have branded themselves with the stamp of selfinhness, and it is known that selfishness in games of any kind destroys the sport of the game. Particularly must I mention some players who patronise tho municipal golf links at Berhampore. These people have no regard for the play of the others on the links, and tuny pass rather cutting, remarks about the number of beginners on the grounds, forgetting, evidently, that they were once in the same boat themselves. . But still more noticeable is their disregard of the etiquette of the game; they pass through other players without a word of excuse or even a 'thank you.' This is strictly against the recognised rules of the game, but apart from the point of etiquette, it shows a lack of the sporting spirit, and worse still displays n pitiful ignorance of^ihe ordinary manners expected from all classes of sportis, whether golf, cricket, or football enthusiasts'.,. I trust that this hint will be taken in the right spirit by the offenders in question, and if they do" not care to correct their behaviour on these links, I would ■ suggest that they acquire a section of land and have their own links where they would not.fae disturbed by beginners." |
