Matthews was surprised at the police reaching Oamaru so quickly. He, said had he suspected their presence they would not have got him so easily. Matthews stated that he intended to get to Canterbury in the night by way of the Waitaki Bridge. "If J. had got to Timaru," he, said, "you (would never have taken me." From this statement it appears that he expected assistance there.' > '
Matthews states that ho threw away the knife he used on the floor. He also used a delicate saw, which was made from a watch spring fitted to a penholder. He considers he should have a, new trial. ,
