INTERCHANGE OF TEACHERS

THREE CANADIANS ARRIVE.

Three Canadian teachers—Misses M'Queen, Tracey, and Lucas—arrived in Auckland by the- Niagara, and yesterday morning Misses Tracy and Lucas reached Wellington. The ladies have come out under a scheme of interchange of tea-chers between the Education Departments of New Zealand and Canada.

Misses Tracy and Lucas were met by the secretary of the Wellington Education Board (Mr. G. L. Stewart), the chief staff officer (Miss M'Kenzie), and the •chairman and secretary of the Lyall Bay School Committee, Miss Tracy having been appointed to the Lyall Bay School. Miss L. Hargreaves, of the school staff, leaves for Canada by the Niagara. Yesterday afternoon, a social gathering was held at the residence of Mr. F. J. Evans, Lyall Bay, for tlie purpose of saying farewell to Miss Hargreaves and welcoming Miss Tracy. There were present : Messrs. T. Forsyth' (chairman Wellington Education Board), F. Bakewell (chief inspector), Miss M'Kenzie (staff officer), Mr, A. A. Gellatly (exchairman of school). Mr. A. Sando (chairman), Mr. F. J. Evans (secretary); Mrs. Glover, the Rev. R.. 11. Oatherwood, Brigadier Hoare, Mr. E. Palliser (members of committee), Mesdames Evans, Cckenden, and Palliser, Mr. A. C. Blake (headmaster),. and the whole ■teaching staff of the school. The speakers were : Messrs. Forsyth, Sando, Bakewell, Blake, and Evans, and Miss Roberts, all of whom extended the very warmest welcome to the Canadian teachers, and expressed the hope that much benefit would accrue to both countries from the arrangement. Feeling referencewas made to the warm hospitality always shown'to New Zea-landera by Canadians. Miss Tracy, in a short reply, referred to the great kindness she and her v coteachers had received already She looked forward to a very pleasant and profitable time in New Zealand.

Miss Lucas, who has been posted to a Nelson school, heartily thanked the committee and Mr. and Mrs. Evans for the opportunity of meeting those present. Mr._Sando,_ on behalf o f the School Committee, wished Miss Ham-eaves non voyage, a pleasant and profitable sojourn" in Canada, and a safe "return. He then made _ a presentation on behalf of the committee to the departing teacher. Miss Tracy commences "duty on Tuesday and Miss Lucas leaves for Nelson on Monday's steamer. The gathering dispersed after carrying by acclamation a vote of thanks to Mr. and'-Mrs. Evans. Miss Hargreave.? had previously been presented with a suit case. Miss Gilpin, who has been transferred to Seatounj received a brooch from the teachers and scholars. Miss Hargreaves has been at .Lyall Bay School for eight years, and Miss Gilpin for seven years.
