FAMINE IN RUSSIA
POISON GAS FOR FUGITIVES.
(Received August 6, 2.30 p.m.)
LONDON, sth August. Advices from Hekingfors state that Soviet representatives declare that stories of the famine are exaggerated. They admit that the population in a number of districts is fleeing to other provinces in search of food, but they deny that there is insurrection in Moscow or other towns, or that .a general mobilisation has been ordered. .
Meanwhile sensational reports continue to be received. Hordes of refugees, chiefly from the Governments of Samara and Saratoff, are fleeing both West and East. They declare that military cordons have been drawn round Moscow, and are using poisonous gas to prevent fugitives from entering the city.
