VANCOUVER, sth August. In the doubles play between Australia and the British Isles in the Davis Cup tie, Anderson and Todd (Australia) defeated Woosnam and TurnbuH (British Isles), 4-6, 9-7, 4-6, 6-2, 6-4.
PITTSBURGH, sth August. The doubles staged the real first test of strength between Australia and England. Masterful tennis was played by both teams, and the result was donbtful from the beginning to,the end. First one team and then another taking the lead, tho match was full of tense moments. The points scored were :— 'First set, Australia, 22; England, 34; second, 45 and 42; third, 28 and 30; fourth, 35 and 26; fifth, 28 and 24.
The match was considered one of the finest played on. the local courts. Turnbull, who played star tennis at first, quickly tired, weight being against) him. Woosnan assumed a part in his partner's burden, and flashed over every corner of the court. Anderson and Todd continued to improve as the match progressed. Todd's services were exceptionally severe and effective, winning each game.
