SITUATION CLEARED

, JAPANESE OPTIMISM.

NEW YORK, sth August

The New York World's Washington correspondent states that Mir. Shidehara, in a letter to a friend, said that in view of the known activities of a oertain group of men who were stirring up antagonism among various nations regarding the Chinese problem, alarm was naturally felt in Japan upon receipt of the invitation to the Disarmament Conference that these men might attempt to play the Bame old game they did in Paris, and force a discussion on issue* serving no useful purpose for any of the Powers, including China. "Should such a situation develop," added Mr. Shidehara, "it would be disastrous to the success of the conference. I ani happy to inform you that our inquiries have clarified the situation. We shail enter the conference ■with high hope and confidence."
