VICE-REGAL.

His Excellency the Governor-General and Viscountess Jellicoe, with a party from Government House,! attended the performance of "H.M.S. Pinafore," at the Grand Opera House yesterday afternoon. Sir Thomas Mackenzie, who is now in England, is expected' to rcium to New Zealand in October. Lady Mackenzie is in Auckland. Mr. W. Evensen, of Blenheim, has boon appointed councillor in New Zoaland for the Swedish Chamber of Commerce for Australasia and the South Sea Islands. ' ■ Mr. Alexander Aitken, formerly engineer to the Thames County, and the last of the surviving members of the search party which set out and found the bones of the well-known Australian explorers, Burke and Willis, in th». heart of the interior in the early 'fifties, died at Waihi yesterday, at the age j>i 90 years. He served' with the Government engineering staff at Kumara during th» Atkinson' Minisivy, which .service he relinquished in liis seventy-third year.—Press Association. In dealing with the resignations presented to the Education Board yesterday, it was unanimously resolved to place on record the thanks • and congratulations of the board on the excellence of their service during many years of pleasant official connection, to Miss S. Fraser, senior lady assistant at the Terrace School; Miss Phoebe Myers, 8.A., secondary assistant at the Hutt D.H;S.; and Mr. C. N. Haslam, M.A., headmaster of the Petone D.H.S. The ladies mentioned carry into a well-earned retirement the hearty good wishes of the board for their well-being. The Chairman (Mr. Forsyth) added that the board were all highly pleased that the worth of the work of Mr. C. N. Haslam, who was practically one of their own. boys, had received substantial recognition ,by his appointment to the inspectorate.

The funeral of the late Mr. Reginald James Dawson, son of Captain J. E. Dawson, harbourmaster, took place this morning, and was very largely attended. The. services at the house and at tho graveside (Karori) were conducted by the Eev. Dr. J. K. Elliott, and a party of boys from the barque Roiia, on which the deceased served a portion of his apprenticeship, acted as pall-bearers. The floral tributes were numerous, and were carried in a special car. The Harbour Board was represented by the chairman (Mr. J, G. Harkness),,the secretary (Mr. H. E. NichoUs), the ' engineer (Mr. J. Marchbanks), and' tho traffic manager (Captain A. "V. Monro), as well as members of the board and representatives of the various staffs.. The Merchant Service Guild, the Marine Engineers' Institute, and the shipping organisations and companies were also represented. Others present included the Mayor (Mr. R-. A. Wright), the Town' Clerk (Mr. J. R. Palmer), Sir John' Luke, Captain Airey (of the barque Rona), Captain H. Johnston, ex-harbourmaster, and many other prominent citizens and friends.
