PICK OF DOGS

WELLINGTON KENNEL CLUB

ANNUAL SHOW OPENS.

(Quality, if not quantity, ia the characteristic of the Wellington Kennel Club's Thirty-third Annual Dog Show, opened to-day in No. 3 Shed of the.Wellington Harbour Board, opposite the entrance to King's Wharf. Entries have been more numerous at shows of the past, but the quality remains typical of the many varieties of the canine breed produced by the selection of fanciers. Last year there were 275 entries; this year the number is over 200. Certain difficulties at the outset in organising the present show militated against numbers. The Kennel Club has been fortunate in securing the services, as judge, .of Mr. S. Crabtree, the English authority of long standing, particularly in bull dogs. Mr. Crabtree is judging all breeds at the show recognised by the English Kennel Club. He is making a world tour, judging dogs in various countries, and has officiated in that capacity in Canada and Australia as well as here. His thorough-going highly-skilled expert examination of the different entries this morning was watched with keen interest by a large crowd of fanciers round the show ring. To-morrow morning,- at 11 o'clock, His Excellency >the Governor-General Lord Jellicoo will be present, when the judging for the Grand Challenge Stakes will be carried out by Mr. Crabtree. Had it been definitely settled earlier that Mr. Crabtree would be able to officiate, there is no doubt the entries would have been much larger. They are numerous in the pointer, setter, bull dog, and various terrior classes, and there is also a fine entry of the smaller and more ornamental breeds, chiefly pomeranians and silkies. Exhibits, represent both Islands, from Dunedin up to Auckland. The show managers are Messrs. E. Bernasconi and P. W. Willson. Mr. R. G. Hollis is honorary secretary.
