"RECORD THAT WILL LIVS FOR EVER"

SPEECH BY LORD JELLICOE.

(BY. TBLBORAPH.—PRESS ASSOCIATION.)

THAMES, 25th April.

An Anzac Day memorial service was held in the theatre. There waY a great muster of returned men, and the Go-vernor-General (Viscount Jellicoe) and staff were present. In his speech, Lord Jellicoe said that we must express undying gratitude for the gallantry of the members* of the N.Z.E.F^ who fell on Gallipoli, and in France and Palestine, in the fisrht for righteousness. The deeds that 1 were performed on 25th April, 1915, had established the name of the New Zealandevs,, and their record would live for ever in; history. His Excellency then read the King's message. At Gaba Tepe the New Zealanders showed the world that they •possessed the spirit of endurance. From the moment' they entered the boat or destroyer till the position was consolidated, they showed that New Zealand soldiers were men of endurance and courage. Admiral De Eobeck had said that they set a standard as high as any in history, and had won a name to be proud . of. Through the months they hung on there were no rest camps on Gallipoli. The instances of individual gallantry were too numerous to mention. One was the capture of Table Top in August. Sir lan Hamilton had 1 said that " neither steeps nor Turks could stop Russell's New Zealanders. The taking of Hill 60 covered the New Zealanders with glory." Lord Haur and Lord Alienby had paid eloquent, testimony to the deeds of these men, whose sacrifice and endurable spirit would act as an inspiration for future generations. New Zealand never forgot, and' in honouring their memory she honoured herself.

At Lord Jellicoe's request every returned man present was presented to the Governor-General and Lady Jellicoe.
