MAYOR AND COUNCIL CANDIDATES
LAST NIGHT'S MMTINGS Mr. P. Hickey, the Labour candidate for the Mayoralty, in the course of his remarks at various meetings last nijrht, referred to the decision of the council, based apparently upon the report of Mr. Bhrks, to spend £384,000 in the construction of a power station at Evans Bay. Ho stated that he had very carefully gone into the report, and came to the very definite conclusion that before this' enormous amount of money was spent there should be a much more exhaustive investigation of the proposals. Mr.' Hickey stated that he had been in consultation with an expert, on this matter, and he was convinced that some of the methods of calculations for expenditure were based upon contingencies so remote as to be practically impossible of occurrence. The candidate also made a.strong plea for proportional representation, for the City Council, and the preferential voto for the Mayoralty. He also urged that the community-created values of land should be the property of the city, instead of going to the enrichment of a comparatively few land speculators.
