"INIQUITOUS SYSTEM "

In the course of hjs report at the annual meeting of householders la&t evening, the headmaster of the Lyall Bay Sphool (Mr. A,. 0- Btaka) protested strongly against the payment of teasers ai*d the staffing of schools on the basis of average attendance, a system which he. described as iniquitous. Payment and staffing on the average roll niVmbsr would, be fairer, but the N.&.E.1. poiitended that payment ehpuld be on the. efficiency and attainments of the teacher. In order to get a rise teachers had to shift from school to school, vvhich tended to upset the satisfactory working qf t*he scjiool. He asked the householders to support t.he resolution of the Now' Zealand Educational Institute that provision ho made for a greater range of salaries withpnt the necee&ity of transfer. The meeting warmly endorsed the resolution, and expressed its desire to assist the teachers in getting justice. A motion to this effect was CiV'i'ied unanimously, with applause.
