ROWING
LOCAL CLUBS' SHIELD CONTEST.
On Saturday next one of the most im,'portant fixtures of the /rowing eea, son—the contest for the Mothes Aggregate Shield among the three local clubs—will take place at the city end of the harbour. The executive of the Wellington Rowing Association, which controls this contest, -has decided upon a programme of nine races, comprising senior, junior, maiden, and youths' fours, junior and maiden pairs, maiden and youths' double sculls, and maiden sculls. Points will be given'to the, successful, clubs in each race—s. for the first place and 2 for the second. Although this is .the first contest for the shield, which was. presented by Mr. F. Mothes quite recently, all three dubs are: displaying a considerable amount' of enthusiasm, and will each; be represented by at loast one crew in every Tace. Upon the performances of the clubs this season it is impossible to have any idea what club would appear'to have the greatest chance, for although the Star Boating Club was very successful at Picton on New Year's Day, tho-Petone and Wellington Clubs woro both, far moro successful at tho Wellington Regatta last month. The result of tho contest for the shield will unr doubtcdly bo very 'close, and this should indeed be gratifying to . Mr. • Mothea -in his .endeavour to stimulate the sport in Wellington. . . . .
