DIRECTOR OF EDUCATION
MR. J. CAUGHLEY, M.A.,
APPOINTED.
The Public Service Commissioner notifies the appointment of Mr. J. Caughley, M.A., to the position of Director of Education in succession to Dr. Anderson, who is about to retire on superannuation.
Mr. Caughley is a.t present Assistant- ' Director o£ Education, to which positioa he was appointed on 24th January, 1916. Prior to his appointment to this position he had 26 years' experience as a teaolier in three education districts— Hawkes Bay, Wellington, and Canterbury—covering every class of school in New Zealand. He was born at Auckland on the 9th February, 1871. He went through hisi earlier training in the Hawkes Bay Educational district. At the opening of thia Wellington Training College for teachers, in 1906, he was appointed as^ sistant in charge of the secondary department. During his university studies he was on the roll of the University Colleges of Canterbury, Victoria, and Auckland. He was awarded the M.A. Degree in 1905, and also gained the Bowen Essay Prize of the New Zealand University.
A Assistant-Director, Mr. Caughley has had a good opportunity of obtaining a wide knowledge of the professional and administrative side of the work of theDepartment in all its branches. He is woll read in educational literature, and ■his views in this connection axe regarded as orthodox and progressive. He has been, intimately connected with the Teachers' Grading Scheme since its inception, and through frequent visits, to difierent parts of Now Zealand has come in personal contact' with the leading teachers and educational officials of the Dominion.
