INSTRUCTIONAL TOUR

Two distinguished lady. swimmers, Misses Shand and Brisfced, of Christchurch, have commenced a tour *of the Dominion jvith the intention of helping young swimmers to develop what is recognised as a uniform and a most advanced style. Their demonstrations' include the breast stroke, the back stroke, the trudge, the crawl, and the trudge crawl. The local exhibition is to be given at the carnival at Te Aro Baths on Saturday n-ext, and in addition the ladies will compete in -events, arrangements hiving been made for Miss Shand to set up a- New Zealand ladies' record for 220 yards. * Two programmes, have been arranged to suit occasions during the tour. 0 The first, for displays other than at schools, is as follows:—Exhibtion of, back-stroke by Miss Shand; exhibition-of .trudge stroke by Miss Shand.; exhibition of crawl by Misses Shand and Bristed; diving by Misses Shand and Bristed — standing neat header, running neat header, and back dive; and one length double-oar and, length crawl. The second, for school carnivals, is as follows: — Exhibition of back-stroke by Miss Shand ; exhibtion of breast-stroke by Miss Bristed ; exhibition of tru3ge by Miss Shand; exhibition of, crawl and trudge crawl by Misses Shand and Bristed; diving by Misses Shand arid Bristed; lesson in how to teach a young siwmmer to improve style—(a) A^jn exercises on land, (b) arm exercises in water (trudge and crawl), (c) leg exercises in water (trudge,) crawl, and trudge-crawl), (d) combining leg and arm in water—the finished swimmer; * and instruction to twelve best girls With-the idea'of their becoming instructors. An idea of the crawl and. trudgecrawl strokes is given as follows: — Crawl: The aim stroke is somewhat similar to the trudge; there is not so much r.oll of the body, and the feet movement'is different from the trudge; the leg is moved fram the ■ hip downwards, the knee being only_ very slightly bent; the movement is a six beat—three b^ats with each leg; the head is kept out of the water to simplify breathing, which should be natural and not forced; ? botti leg and arm action can be practised independently. Trudge-crawl: This is a combination of both the trudge and the.crawl; it is the trudgeon stroke with, the crawl kick intermingled with a small narrow scissor or trudge kick; with the exception of the kick the position of the body is similar to the trudge; to do this method properly the arms cannot Be moved at a very great rate, otherwise the timing of the legs and arms becomes extremely difficult and is apt to become broken. The trudge-crawl is the style mostly used by present-day champions of Mew Zealand. .
