UNIVERSITY SENATE
JO-DAY'S BUSINESS
The Senate of the University of New ■Zealand met again this morning and 'discussed various motions standing on the order paper. The Chancellor (Sir Robert Stout) presided. '
The Rev. Dr. Cameron moved: "That with a view to the encouragement of our commerce and industries the scheme for a diploma in commerce for ..-the. several groups—Commerce, etc.t-bo referred to ilie Arts and Commerce Committee for report." . . '
This was seconded by Professor Hight and carried. .' .''•■..
Professor: Wall <moved: "That in the opinion of Senate the time has come when the science of Philology should be accorded a distinct and definite status in the syllabus of the university." - This was seconded by Professor Thompson, and on a division, by 12 to 7. Professor Dettrqann moved: "That the Entrance Examinations . Committee , consider, and report on, the. desirability of abolishing the privilege of the partial pass at Matriculation, or, alternatively, of extending its range by affording candidates who, have gained such a pass an opportunity of completing at a special examination, held each year about the middle of February." . ' ', This" was('seconded by Professor Hunter, and carried.
Professor Rankine-Brown moved:— "That the.Senate would welcome the appointment of a. Royal Commission on, the tJniyersity and University Colleges of New Zealand, headed by some eminent educationalist from the United Kingdom, and that a copy o£ this 1 resolution be forwarded to the Minister of Education.'>'
Professor Benham seconded the motion, Avhioh. after _ considerable discussion was lost on a division by 15 votes to 6.
The Hon. J. A. Hdnan moved :-jt-" That the Entrance Examinations Committee' be ivsked to consider and report on the question of separating: the'questions set in history and political geography respectively from the English.paper for the matriculation examination, and also what course can be adopted for the fullor encouragement of the study of history and civics in the schools." ' This was carried.
Tho Senate adjourned until Monday.
