SUMMER RACES

WELLINGTON RACING CLUB

MEETING

SECOND DAY

' The -weather for the, holiday (Anniversary Day) was dull in the early morning, but "the sun shone out at Trentham before midday. Judging by the crowded trains' and the large traffic by road the attendance will probably exceed all previous figures. The N.Z. Natives' Association Band is again in attendance, arid'enlivened the proceedings. The rain which fell the previous day did the track gobd.-and freshened up the enclosures. Details of the .racing are appended:— •MUNGAROA JUMPERS' FLAT HANDICAP, of 350-sovs; second horse 70 'soys andthird 35 soys from the stake. Minimum weight 9.0. One mile and a-half. ' ' ;\Y. G. ' (Winner trained by owner.) . .All the acceptors in the opening event I "-went to the barrier, the rise of. which ! saw Paddington Green, on the inside position, well left. .Maniahera was favourite, with Pacific Slope and Padding- ; ton Green well supported. The favourite and-Master Boris were first put, and led past the stand, both being on equal terms. At the mile Mania-hera and Master Boris were still at the head of the field, • with Lord Nagar and King Star in close , attendance. Just afterwards Zola moved \up into fifth place. The field remained well bunched going along the back, tho two leading .positions being still unchanged. At the turn towards' tho ; straight Zola was noticed to make another move forward, and the colours of Pacific Slope also became prominent. Zola had the advantage on entering the straight, but some of the'rear division then took a hand in matters. At the distance King Star was going well alongside Zola, and, n . lead, passed the post with a short length advantage. -Pacific Slope, who was finishing'well, was about two lengths behind .Zola. Lord Nagar was 'fourth, and Maniahera. next, with Goldstream and Paddington Green bringing up the rear. Cutts.) 1 "Pente, Early. Dawn, and Bitters were • taken out of this event, for which the ■most fancied candidate was Miss Mimic. Sycorax also found many admirers. The .inside position.of the bigifield of seventeen was' drawn by Counter Attack. After a little uneasiness at the barrier, a fairly good start was effected. " R-ose Wreath, and- Aaterina were out first, and .at.the five furlongs post they showed the -way to Woden, Miss Mimic, and tSyco- . rax. -Coming round to the straight Sycorax and Miss Mimic moved up to handy positions, and when the field turned for 'home these two appeared to advantage. Miss Mimic had headed, off the leaders ,_at the distance, and Sycorax was in close . attendance. A challenge by the latter was not effective, and the favourite ."passed the post a length and a-half ahead of Gray's mount. Nobleman finished well into third position, two lengths away, and of the rest Bo Peep filled' fourth position, with Asterina 'handy. Time, lmin 39see. ■

Statuette, Sweet Memory, and Rational to oppose Gloaming, who once again added' to his numerous great'performances. On "thjLs occa'fiidn" liis form was" better than it ever had.been. Public opinion was over-' whelmingly in favour of the top-weight. Rational drew the inside running, with Gloaming next, and Sweet Memory on .

tho outside. ..Gloaming .was not quite steady at tha barrier, but the four were sent away in good order. Statuette appeared to get a little in front as they left. Rational next went ahead on the rails, and a great race was witnessed to thi third furlong. Here Gloaming - was chopped out by Rational and Statuette, and thero was every appearance, that Rational would win. Deeley handled Gloaming :n a, splendid manner, and, although his mount was lying third with less than a furlong to go, he piloted Gloaming betwvjen, the two leaders and enabled; the favourite to register a great victory, by a head from Rational. >. The time, 45sec, is, much betyei'' than the previous ''ecord put up by Surveyor at lliccarton. , • The crowd showed its apreciation on Gloaming's return to the bird-cage. / WELLINGTON RACING CLUB HANDICAP, of 100 a soys, second 200 soys and third 100 soys from the- - stake. M'lvor). ■ Bonnie Heather was the only withdrawal from the • principal event, for which Eleus was sent out favourite, wisi First Salute and Pente also well supported. From a good start iMaioha temporarily showed\ the way, but was soon replaced at the head of the field by Esperance and Eleus, Maioha and Red Ribbon being handy round to the back stretch, where Esperance was leading. This position was maintained, except that Lovematch and Client, 1 who were lying last, moved up to better places. Esperance .led into the, straight, where First Salute and Lovematch were noticed to be close, to Eleus. The> last-mentioned four decided the finish, which went to the •, South Island representative by a length from the little-fancied Esperance. Lovematch did well to finish third, 1£ longths away.
