A DANGEROUS TRAMCAR
A strange case was brought on. at the Magistrate's Court yesterday afternoon, when an ex-tramway motorman, James William Taylor, was charged, in his absence, with having driven a tramcar negligently in Bintoul-street on 29th October. Senior-Sergeant M'N&mara, for the police, said that on the morning of the accident Taylor was in charge of a double-decker car from Island Bay, and, driving down a grade of about one in eighteen in Rintoul-street at a great rate, caught up with, a horse express, driven by P. C. Boberts, carried it 'about sixteen yards, and, as it swerved,, jammed it almost through a road fence. Boberts said that ho had no warning till the tram was right upon him. H© was somewhat injured, as was also the horse, and the express suffered very considerably;. Two witnesses estimated the speed of the tram at 30 miles an hour down the grade. Inspector Liardet stated that the tranv' brakes were in good order,, and that Taylor had since been dismissed. The Magistrate,' Mt. V. X, Hunt, imposed a fiu? of &&, with £3 9s oostfi.
