WELLINGTON CLUB'S

MEETING

OPENED IN STEADY RAIN

Hie Wellington Trotting Olub's annual one-day meeting is being held on the Hutt Park, . Petbne, to-day in steady rain. The train arrangements were satisfactory, and motor conveyl alines were available to take people from the station to the course. The club did all that was possible to provide for tho comfort and convenience of its patrons, and credit is due to the secretary (Mr. R. W. Short). Members of the Racing Commission were present at the meeting. ■ ■■ .. Angel was badly left at the start. At tlie two furlongs post Humariki showed the way to Imperial Boy and Crusader, after which Plain Rose moved up into second;] place. When six furlongs had been covered, Plain Rose was no longer in a dangerous position, and the favourite, Crusader, went to th© front. He was able to maintain his position, and won, pulling up, by four lengths from Imperial Boy. Humariki was/another three .'lengths away and Angel finished fourth. Twomey). When the field had settled down, Hauriua had a big lead, with Ellawood and j Rpmaroa next. Before half the distance was completed, Hauriua was done with, and at the six^ furlong mark Ellawood was just in front of Ramaroa. Kingsmoor was with the leading pair on entering the straight for the second time, but his challenge was ineffective. Ramaroa won by two lengths, and there were six lengths between second and third. Glad Eye was out first after a fair start, and at the two furlongs was just in front of Marie Lloyd and Queen Pirate. At the end of five furlongs Mako Mako and Rorke's Drift closed .up, but the former broke. ' A little later Marie.Lloyd joined Glad Eye m. the lead, and commencing, the last lap Marie Loyd was just clear of Glad Eye, with, Queen Pirate, Rorke's Drift, and Mako Mako in close attendance. Mako Mako broke again at the half-mile post, and Rorke's Drift went up into second place. On entering the straight Marie Lloyd was just in front of Rorke's Drift, aiid in the last 100 yards the latter drew away to win by about a length.. Glad Eye was a dozen lengths away third, and Queen Pirate half a, length further back fourth. Time, 4min 39sec. PRESIDENT'S HANDICAP TROT , (Harness) of 200 soys;' gecond horse 30 soys and third horse 20 soys from $take. Two miles. A. J. Murray's b g. Peter M'Millan, by Petereta — Lady Rothsea, aged, 3sec (K. H. Smith) 1 D. R. Mackay's b g Admiral Derby, by Lord Derby—Cinders, aged, 9soc (0. E. Hooper) 2 T. Fox's b m Carbinea, by El Carbine—Gardenia, 3 years, lOsec (T. Fox) '. 3 (Winner trained by K. H. Smith.) Also started:—Mangoutu 7sec (F. Holmes), Happy Jack Bsec (H. R. Hubbard); Miss Pirate lOsec (W. Taylor). Admiral Derby went out favourite. Mangoutu did not get; away properly until the field had a big break on him, and .although he went well he could not retrieve his. pqsition. Admiral Derby went to the front, and the first time past the stand he was some distance ahead of Miss Pirate, with Carbinea running next. The last-named broke at seven furlongs, and when the stand was reached on the second occasion Admiral Derby.was still in the lead, while Pater M'Millan had moved up to second place. These two ■ fought out the finish. Admiral Derby broke in the straight; this gave Peter M'Millan a chance to get in front, and he won by a neck. Carbinea was thirty yards away, and Mangoutn.j close up fourth Time, 4min 58sec.
