AUCKLAND'S GROWTH

The total rateable valuation of Auckland city, exclusive of Grey I^ynn, for the : current year shows an increase of £136,140 over the total for the previous year (states the Auckland H/irakl). The city valuer, Mr. P. A. Npfcley, has submitted to.tho Mayor a statement'giving the figures.for the Greater Auckland;district, the Grey Lynn returns-being treated separately, as thi« is the first-year in which that district has been assessed on Hhe annual values basis. The statement shows that the rateable valuation of Greater Auckland, including' Grey Lynn, ■totals £1,489,268 this year, this consisting of £100,610 for Grey Lynn and £1,388,758 for the remainder of the area. These figures are, of course, subject to revision' by the Assessment Court, though ill is aiot' anticipated^ that there will be any groat reduction? . In compiling the returns tho valuer has not taken advantage of the excessive prices being obtained, nor of the high rents.- No comparative figures can be given in the case of Grey Lynn, as hitherto it has been assessed on unimproved values, but the following are the comparative figures for the remainder of the Greater. Auckland district, comprising the city, Parnell, Archhill, Eq!enterrace, Epsom, and Remuera: — TOTAL RATEABLE VALUES (Excluding Grey Lynn). £ 1921-1922 1,388,753 1920-1921 1,252,618 j Increase for this year £136,140 The increase is accounted for as follows : —New buildings and land previously exempt, such as reclamations by the Harbour Board, £14,981; increase in tram and Gas Company's assessments cauiied' by the merging of Grey. Lynn, £2916 ; old | valuations increased, £118,243, or 9.4 per cent. The total number of assessments this year was 19,719, and last veiir 16,779, an increase of nearly 300 C. ".The valuer calls attention to the fact that I;in 1910-11, prior to the Greater Auckland era, there wore 8925 assessments, and the total rateable value of the city was £555,132.
