MEETING OF NEW ZEALAND COUNCIL

A meeting the New, Zealand Chess Association was'held at 52, Cuba-streot, on Wednesday evening, when Mr. E.; H. Sovorne, of Nelson (a South Island vicepresident) occupied the chair. The following •delegates were present:—W. E. Mason (Oamarq), »F. J. Brookor (Canterbury), K. K. Kelling (Auckland W.M. Club and Timai-u), A. W Gyles (Wellington), ,S. Faulknor .(Wellington W.M.C.) and W. Wring (Palmerston North Club), D. Purchas (Wellington South), H. Jes6up (Wanganui), G. A. Jones (Mafiterton), and C. W. Tanner (Napier). An apology was received from Mr. W. jVlaclcay, tho local vice-president. Mr. C. W. ,Tanner (h<m. secretary) read a .mass of correspondence, which dealt mainly with the championship tourney recently held in Dunedin; and with.last year's Congress Book.. Tho Governor-General intimated that he had much pleasure in accepting the office ot pation, and tendered beßt wishes for the success of the annual championship tourney. Trie Canterbury Club wrote stating that as JSIr. Severne had removed to Nelson their representatives on the N.Z. Adjudication Board would now be Messrs. H. Andersen, W. S. Kiug, and H. Kennedy. Theso appointments were formally confirmed on the motion of Mr. F. J. Brooker. Subscriptions wero received from the following clubs:—Nelson, Canterbury, Wanganui, Wellington W.M. Club, Wellington South, Ngaio, Mnster: ton, Palmerston North, and Auckland. Donations were received from Mr. R. A. Cieland, of Dunedin' (president), E. H. Soverne,'- of Nelson (vice-president), F. Eummor, of ■■ Ma^terton (vice-president), and O. C. Pleaßants, of Wanganui (viceC resident). Special congress prizes have een received from the Otago Chess Club, R©v. Friberg (the club's president), and Mr. F. Kummer. Donations to last year's Congress Book havo been reoeiveel from Messrs. J. C. M'Crea (Napier), W Moore i (Carterton), Dr. Howard (Taumarunm), Rev. B. G. Fox (Hdkett), and F. K. Kelling (Wellington). Hearty 'votes of thanks were accorded to these various' donors, and also to tho Otago Chess Club for its excellent organising and rnott successful^ carrying out of tho recent. championship ; tournament. Pleasure was ex r prcesed at the fact that the championship had for tho first time Been won by an Oamaru representative (Mr. J. B. Dun lop), this being the first South ißland win since Easter, 1901. „ It was decided to notify the insurance^ company concerned that the association's trophy is now in the custody of 'Mr. Dunlop, of pamaru. On the motion of Mr. Jones, a hearty voto o£ thanks was accorded to Mr. J. A. Connell for editing last year's Congress Book, and to .Mr. F. K. .Rollingl for Part 11. of. the book club statifitics and. several pages devoted to "obituaries." Several complimentary. references were maide to tho manner in which, theso two enthusiasts had carried out the, work, 1 and the motion, which was seconded by ( Mr.' Jessup, was carried with loud applause. The question' of whether or not a book should be issued in connection with tho championship tourney .recently held in Dunedin', then received preliminary consideration...'Mr. Tanner pointed out that suoh a book would cost, at least £25. The amociacion would also: ha.ye to provide £20 for thd thirty-first championship tourney, which is duo to be held late in tho present yeav. The amount in haml 3s' at present about £7, and to this will be added in due course sales from last year's Congress Book and the various subscriptions and donations for the year 1921. The Wanganui and Nelson Clubs havo kindly promised donations, or guarantees, for a book of the recent congress. There appears' to' be a general desiro ,to\ avoid £rbreafe«in' these publications.
