EXPORT MEAT MARKET

FALL IN PRICES.

Messrs. R, Allow, and Co., Ltd., havo just received the following advices from their London agents, Messrs. L. U. Ballantino and Co.:—

"We have to advise you that the general industrial situation in the United Kingdom is cause for considerable alarm. Unemployment is noticeable on an increasingly large sealo; prices in almost all commodities, whether food or manufactured goods, aro dropping perceptibly, and wo consider it our duty to advico you of this. "At tho present Lime tile Government New Zealand mutton and lamb holds.up ita price because of tho great shortage of this particular article, but Home-grown meat, which is now fairly plentiful, is getting woukeiv In pork,,a considerable, drop has occurred, and a further drop is likely. Home-grown mutton oven which is none too plentiful is cheaper than of late, and as a consequence of tho general situation thero is not the same eagerness to deal c.i.f.o. as thoro was a month or two ago. Without committing ourselves at the present time wo should think that thero will be a slump in the meat trade in future, as in all other trades and industries, and the situation will require very careful watching."

Commenting on this, Messrs. Arlow report that during the past fortnight, tho e.i.f. value of new season's prime New Zealand lamb has dropped one penny por Ib, prime wethers havo dropped threefarthings, whilst ewes have shown a similar decline. Prime Now Zealand ox beef is hardly saleable at all at a reasonable price in London, although one or two small parcels have been sold c.i.f. torm3 in Glasgow. Cow and bull beef is similarly at a discount, as English buyers have withdrawn, anticipating lower prices.
