SOME INTERESTING FIGUEES,

W. R. Rhodes, with C. B. Fry and J. T. Tyldesley, played his' first Test match against, Australia at Nottingham on Ist June, 1899. The Australians in that tour were led by J. Darling,'who won the toss from Dr. W. G-. Grace, who made his last appearance in Test cricket in this match. Rhodes, in the first innings, disposed of M. A. Noble, F. Layer, W. P. Howell, and E. Jones (four for 58), and in the second J. Darling, M. A. Noble, and H. Trumbls (three for 60). The game was drawn. In the second match at Lord's, England was defeated by 10 wickets, the Yorkslureman accounting for J. Darling, J. Worrall, nnd M. !A. Noble, for 108 runs in the first innings, and in the second no wickets for nine was recorded, when Darling nnd Worrall hit off the required number of runs. The next three matches at Leeds, Manchester, and the Oval were drawn. Rhodes was dropped with J. T. Tyldesley, G. J. Jessop, O. L. Townsend, and \V. Mead for the Leeds game, was twelfth man for Manchester, and. at the Oval was pelted in the first innings for 79 runs without any success, but at his second attempt v V. Trumper, S. E. Gregory, ' and C. E. M'Leod fell for 27 runs. The next five Tests were played in Australia. England was led by* A.. C. Mackren, who was without the services of W. B. Hhodes, who made his reappearance at •Birmingham, where Australia evaporated for 36 and 46 for two wickets.. In this match, R. A. Duff, J. Darling, M. A. Noble, W. W. Armstrong-; A.' G. Hopkins, E. Jones, and W. P, .Howll were the victims in the first • innings (seven for 17), and V. Trumper in the second (one for 9). At Lord's, England scored 102 for two wickets, when an old friend appeared, which terminated play —rain. At Sheffield, Australia won by 143 runs, Rhodes one for 33 (M. A. Noble), and five for 63 (R. A. Duff, W. W. Armstrong, J. J. .Kelly, H. Trumble, and J. V. Saunders). England lost the next gaJiie at Manchester by three runs. At Adelaide, Armstrong (one for 45) and Trumper (one for 46). The fourth match at Sydney saw "The Ashes" recovered. Rhodes's share in this game was four for 33—M'Alister, Gregory, M'Leod, and Trumble—and: none for 12. For the final Test of the tour at Melbourne, Rliodes's figures were one-for 41—C. Hill—and two for 52— Duff and Noble. During the 1905 English season, Rhodes played in four of the five Tests. He did not take part in'the game at Leeds. His victims this year were: Armstrong (one for 37), Cotter (one for 58), Duff, Gregory, Kelly (three for 70), Armstrong, Layer (two "for 25), M'Leod, Gehrs, and Trumper (three for 36). In the fifth Test, Rhodes failed to obtain a wicket (none for 59, and none for 29). Rhodes was a member of the English team which visited Australia under the leadership of A. O. Jones in 1907-8. In the five Tests, the bowler only bagged seven wickets for 421. The regretful batsmen were : Ransford (one for 13 and none for 13), Noble (one for 37, none for 38, none for 35, none for 81, none for 21, and one for 66), 'Bansford (none for 15, and four for 102)— Noble, Trumper, Carter, and Saunders. During the 1909 tour of the Australians, Khodes's figures were eleven wickets for 242 runs. The details are; Bardsley, Macartney, Cotter, and Carter (none for 8, and four for 38), Armstrong and Cotter (two for 44), Trumper, Armstrong, Hopkins, Macartney, and Cotter (none for 25, and five for 83), none for 34, and none for 35. Rhodes was unable to obtain a wicket in Australia during the last toiii, his figures being none_ for 57. Kellewny, Bardsley, and Hazlitt were the three batsmen disposed of in the 1912 English summer, Oldfield in the Test at Melbourne, and Mailey, M'Donald, and Oldfield at Adelaide are the Yorkshireman's scalps this tour.
