OPENING OF SENATE

CHANCELLOR'S ANNUAL REPORT

The annual sessions of the Senate of the University of New Zealand were opened yesterday in the old Legislative Council 'Chamber in Parliament Buildings. Tho Chancellor (Sir Robert Stout) presided. The members present -were : Professor Macmillan Brown (Christchurch), vice-chancellor; Mr. J. O. Adams (Christchurch), Dr.. Anderson (Wellington), Professor Benham (Dunedin), Professor J. R. Brown (Wellington), Professor Dettmann (Auckland), Hon. J. A. Hanan (Wellington), the Rev. Dr. Cameron (Dunedin), Hon. Dr. Collins (Wellington), Mr. H. F. yon Haast (Wellington),. Professor Hight (ChristcEurch), Professor Hunter (Wellington), Mr. H.-J.-D. Mahon (Auckland), Dr. Ferguson (Dunedin), Professor Thompson (Dunedin), Professor Wall (Ohristchurch), Professor Segar Auckland), Professor A. P. W. Thomas (Auckland).

In tho course of his annual report, th« Chancellor referred to th* increased revenue due to the increase iv theliurriber of candidates for almost every degree course. For . the entranoe. examinations " the numbers were 141 for scholarships, '3027 for matriculation, as compared' with 143 and 2655 respectively in 1919. In 1910 the candidates for matriculation numbered 1442 and in 1911 only 1112. Since that year there had been a steady increase, until the present year. The number of candidates for degree examinations was 2927, as compared with 2413 in tbe previous year. The Chancellor referred to the difficulty with so large a number of candidates for-»examiners, and the office, to get the work done within the same period of time as was allowed when the entrants' were less, than half what they were now.

Other matters reviewed by the Chancellor were the awarding of four Rhodes scholarships during the year to Messrs. H. G. Miller, M.A., of Victoria University College; S. P. M'Callum, 8.A., Canterbury College, W. T. G. A very, M.A., Auckland University College; and H. J. Eyburn, 8.A., Otago University. The 1851 Exhibition Research Scholarship was awarded to Mr. R. M. Winter, M.Sc, .Auckland University College.

After a. lengthy report, on the recommendations of the Board of Studies, published in yesterday's issue, the Chancellor referred finally to a concession by which Cambridge University granted entrance to the university without the necessity of passing the previous examination to students who had duly matriculated in New Zealand. The effect was that a. New Zealander who had passed, the matriculation examination in, say, English, mathematics, Latin (or Greek), French, and physical science could proceed to his degree-at Cambridge without passing the previous examination. The Chancellor also mentioned the gift to the University of £100 by the widow of Dr. W. L. Christie, the first member of the University to obtain th* degree of Bachelor of Medicine. The interest of the gift was to be applied for an annual medical prize, as the University nvight decide. The- late Dr. Christie, who died at aea on 2-2 nd July, 1920, obtained a, prize for anatomy, and his widow suggested that this subject might be tha one adopted for the prize. At the conclusion of the report, the Senate elected various committees-to deal with different, branches of tho business.
