MINISTERS' SALARIES

THE BRITISH PROPOSALS.

Recent cable- messages have referred, to tho suggestion that the salaries of British Cabinet Ministers, cspeciallyV that of tho Prime Minister^ should be increased. The proposals, which a few weeks ago were expected to result from tho inquiry of tho Select Committee appointed to report on tho matter, wc/e:

Prime Minister's salary to be increased from £5000 to £10,000 a year, with a pension.

The salaries of the Scottish Secretary, tho President of the Board of Education! and the Mjnister of Agriculture to be raised from £2000 to £5000' a year. Three or four sinecure, Ministerial offices such as the Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster lo be abolished, and sufficient money thus saved to enable the increases recommended to be made without extra charge to the taxpayer. ■.M.P.s' salaries oi ,£4OO a year not to be raised, but to be paid free of income tax, on the ground that: they are really an allowance for expenses. (At present members , pay about £100 of their salaries in income tax.) \.

\ Proposals that M.P.s should have free railway vouchers, and free postage for their letters were before the Committee. The former was being considered favourably, tho latter unfavourably.
