FOWLING TOURNAMENT
CHAMPION RINK MATCHES
SEMI-FINALS TO-DAY.
The prospects early this morning were not favourable for the continuation of the Bowling Tournament, but at, 9 o'clock the clouds broke, and were quickly dispelled, and an hour later the sun was shining brightly. The heavy, southeasterly storm of the early morning had soused the greens, but the Tournament .Committee decided to commence the day's play at 10.15 o'clock. Only nine teams were left in tho rinks, competition after yy.esterday's three. eliminating rounds, and the four games were set down for the Wellington Green. This green has good drying capacity, and, as soon as the rain stopped, the mower was put over it, and, while the caretaker'was engaged on this work, volunteers followed in his wake with tho roller. In this way no time was lost, and play commenced sharply at 10.15 o'clock. The teams still left in the tournament are: Reid ' (Lyall Bay), Jury (Karangahake), Graham (Remuera), Renuie. (Christchurch), Marriatt (Lin■svood), Smart (New Plymouth), M'Whannel (Hataitai), Ham (Inveroargill), and London (Wanganui) Of the above only Reid and Jury have not had a ]os,s in the eliminating rounds. Bush) and Mrs. Bush this afternoon. The distinguished visitors were due to.arrive at 4 p.m., and a.n enthusiastic reception was arranged for them by the bowlers. Great local interest is evinced in the concluding rounds, and the green this morning was ringed with .spectators, including many ladies. As play proceeded the green become keener, and, after an hour or two', was drawing well.
Porteous (Wellington), who went down to Powell (Eastbourne) yesterday, had to face a difficult last head. Three of his opponents' shots were around the !jack. lie played a firm shot to carry the kitty to his own bowls. He caught the jack, but the trick was against him, and he only scored a single, and lost the match by 2 points.-
■ Eastbourne, after defeating Porteous, went' down badly in the evening to London (Wanganui). The team seemed to go to pieces. The same fate befell New Plymouth (Smart). Their game .w,ith Ponsonby seemed to have left, them limp, and Jury (Karangahake) scored a rather easy
In the first game during the afternoon >- 'esterda.y, Jury just managed to get a nose in front of Marriott (Linwood). The result was due to a magnificent 3ast shot' of his. The game was even, and he had the head against him, and his only chance was to carry the jack. After spending some time looking at the head he decided to do this, and did it, »nd won by 3 points.
