MEETING OF BOROUGH COUNCIL.

. The first meeting of the Petone Borough Counoil for the now year was hold last evening. Present-^Mr. J. W. M'Ewan (Mayor), Councillors „C. P. Brocklebank, W. Cox, J. L. Churcliouse, J. Kyla, Win. Hay, A. Anderson, D. S. Bedingfield, G. Cook, and "£, Tovcy. „ Tho Health., Inspector notified a case of diphtheria, in tho borough. Tho Board of Managers of' St. David'a Presbyterian Church thanked the council for its thoughtfulness'. in increasing the water p'ressuro on Sunday jnorninge and evenings. '

Mr.. A. Spence was granted a billiard saloon; license.

Tho ■ Sooretary 'of : the Wellington Gas Workers/.Union .'w.roteadvieing- that at a general mooting of the above union, hold on the 14th January, it was pointed oub that the council,had not seen fit to pay its gas workers the bonus which had been granted by the -A rbitration Court. He ; asked that tho matter should bo brought beforo the council in order that the matter -mnv be- settled and tho bonus paid. Councillor Churhouso moved, and CounToyey seconded, thai tho stokers and men employed at'the'gas works be paid tho 3s bonus. On being put to the vote, the motion was lost, only Councillors Churchhou3e, Toyey, and the Mayor^ voting for it. Councillor Churchouse then moved a further motion: —"That tho bonus be paid to all tho borough employees, including tho* raemb«r& of jthe Gas workers' Union." 1 There was no seconder to this, and. tho motion lapsed.
