LONDON, 16th January. The week-end sees a great increase in unemployed. The complete or partial dosing of more works has rendered idle 100,000 more workers. The (Joveinment ias put up "short-timo notice.?" at the docks and arsenal, and these have caused turbulent excitement. -Mass meetings strongly condemned ihe Government's action^ The Sunday, papers view the situation gloomily. Mr. J. L. Uarvin attributes the position partly to the crushing luad of taxation, which must be lightened by hook or by crook. ?.Ir. Robert lilatehford denounces the Government's labour proposals for meeting the unemployment position as equal to political quackery. Some papers foresee an early, gentiul election unless the Government evolves a bold policy of reconstruction. LONDON", 16th January. The employees at the Portsmouth Dockyard have received notice of seven hours' less work weekly, and a corresponding reduction in wages. Those wishing to leave nuist t;ik-e this as a week's notice of discharge.
