PUKEKAWA MURDER
TRIAL OF THORNE,
(JT TEUGIUPH.—PRESS ASSOCIATION.)
AUCKLAND, This Day
The trial of Samuel • John Thorne, charged with the murder of Sydney Eyre, at Pukekawa, on 24th August, began in the Supreme Court this morning. Mr. J. C. Martin opened , the case for the Crown at length, urging as a motive for the crime that accused had a strong desire to possess the dead man's wife, while his monetary position would probably be considerably improved. Counsel commented upon Mrs. Eyre's movements, and said he thought it had been proved conclusively that she was innocent. The only other person who would have any motive for the murder was the prisoner. Mr. Martin proceeded to outline many facts and adduced in evidence which he contended pointed to Thorne as the criminal.
