NOTES AND COMMENTS

(By "Sir Lancelot.")

The WeUesley Stakes has-never been won by a Trentham-trained liorse. Local stables are better represented in the coming race than on any previous occasion. Messrs. Riddiford luive paid up for Left (the full sister to Nones). Mr. W: Higgins has left in both Martial Dawn (Martian —Torquata) j;nd the halfsister to Silver link. Lady Violet ran well enough in the Avondale Stakes to give her a ohanoe among the probables. Princess Pat and Backsheesh, who will carry Dr. G-ilmer's colours for the first time, will be at a disadvantage compared to some- of the others, as they have not had a race. The visiting contingent will include the unbeaten Mermin and Rational; also two other winners in Fulsome and Toa Taua.

The Wairarapa owner, Mr. W. E. Kemball, is going the right way to again top the list of winning owners for the Dominion thisi season. Tenterfield, Miss Gold, and Trespass won at Wangaimi, and Mies Maid, Martian Miss, and Explorer at Otaki. Miss Gold ndded to the record at Napier Park, and Tenterfield took the principal event at Eawkes Bay. Martian Miss (the four-year-old full sister to Vagabond) should add to the stable record at Masterton and Trentham. On the concluding day of the Otaki Meeting she ran second with 8.6 in a six furlongs race, and has 7.9 in a five furlongs race at Masterton. She has 8.0 in a, six furlongs ra.oe at Trentham, and if she wins- at Masterton will have to carry 8.7.

Mr. W. G. Stead will be represented at the Wellington Meeting. G. Jones has booked accommodation for seven horses.

TheTlb penalty for the W;inganui -win evidently extinguished Duo't. chance in the Hawkes Bay Guineas, as he finished outside the money. Humbug, second at Wanganui, won from Delight and Raceful. This is the first occasion that one of Absurds stock has raced successfully over a mile course. • Humbug is not in the Champion Plate, in which Duo, Delight, and Raceful all claim engagements.

The racing the Tauherenikau-trained Orane is having over fences; is improving him. He ran third.at Napier and second at Hastings. His next appearance will be at Trentham.

v When sent out favourite for the Napier Park Stakes last Saturday, Tenterfield failed badly. In the Spring Handicap at Hastings yesterday lie met Molyneux on a stone better terms, aaid defeated the Napier winner. The Waiiganui and Hastings wins were worth 360 soys. Tenterfield will have to put up 71b extra in the New Zealand Cup, which will increase hie impost in that event to 8.1. Tenterfield has also earned an additional 71b in the Masterton Cup, which will bring his weight up to 8.6. The following recent foalings at tha Waikanae Stud aro announced : —Peirene (Achilles—Bluewater), bay iilly to Kilbroney, on 17th September; Dearest (Soult—Lady Hester), bay colt to Boniform, on 22nd September; Skirl (Martian—Reel), bay or brown colt to Boniform, on 24th September; Kibble (halfsister to Emperador), bay filly to Boniform, on 26th September; Ro6yth (Charlemagne ll.—Ailsa), brown filly by Svilbroney, on 26th September; Lady Jean 11., bay filly by Kilbroney, on 23rd September; Kifiena (Kilbroney—Eva), bay colt by Boniform, on Ist October; Snbwlike (Multifid—Snowsteß), bay colt by Kilbroney, on 2nd October; Merry Margaret (Bezonian —Margarethe), bay colt by Boniform, on 3rd October; Sunbird (sister to Mascot), brown colt by Kilbroney, on 6th October.
