MAGISTRATE'S COURT
Eight inebriates appeared on the charge sheet presented to Mr. F. K. Hunt in the Magistrate Court this morning. Six of them were fir.st offenders and were dealt with in the Usual manner. Elizabeth Wilson, with one previous conviction, was fined £1, the amount of her bail. James O'Toole; with two recent previous convictions, was dealt with in a similar manner.
Alfred Barrett pleaded not.guilty to a charge of having assaulted Frederick ICnox on Lambton-quay yesterday evening Sub-Inspector Emerson said the assault was a cowardly one. Knox was standing on the footpath, and defendant struck him from behind, felled him to the ground, and rendered him unconscious. Defendant, who is _a fireman on the Waimana, was fined £5, in default a month's imprisonment. nOJ was ordered to receive £1 out of the fine, and his day's expenses. ; Robert J. Gilchrist was fined £1 for failure to comply with an order for the maintenance of his child.
Walter Harry Chapman, a prohibited person, was fined 10s for having been on licensed premises. . ..
George Jackson was charged with haying assaulted two men named Formosa and Eeneck. Mr. P. W. Jackson appeared for the defendant The cass was ditmissed. ■ . ' .
