BUTTER PRICES
"Stocks of last season's butter are reported by some firms to be exhausted in" Wellington," said Mr. P. Eraser (Wellington Central) in the House of Representatives yesterday, "and for the new season's supplies 2s lOd a, pound is being charged. Would it not be. possible for the Board of Trade to prevent the increase for a few days until Parliament decide what the policy and the future price is to be? Surely an adjustment could be made afterwards."
The Eon. X I. Leo replied that it was not. the function of tho Board of Trade to direct that commodities should be sold at a. ioss. It could only see that only n. fair profit was made.
The Prime jVlinister said that it was not possible for the fiovernment to interfere until the Parliamentary Committee hod reported, and it could then decide •what should be done.
