VICTORIOUS ATHLETES
ENTHUSIASTIC GATHERING AT
PETONE.
One of the largest and most enthusiastic gatherings ever held in Petone took place last evening in the Palace Theatre, when the citizens tendered a. complimentary social and dance to Petone's champion athletes. The hall was gaily and artistically decorated wjth bunting and evergreens, and the large hall was packed. This season Petono lias excelled in almost every kind of sport, and the citizens showed their appreciation of the prowess of its athletes in no uncertain manner. The Mayor (Mr. J. W. M'Ewan) presided, and on the, platform were Mr. T. M. Wilford, W.P., Dr. A. K. Newman, M.P., Dr. Thacker, M.P., Major Hardham, V.C., and representatives of the various clubis nnd sports bodies. The Mayor 'referred to the great success that had been achieved in the field of sport by the lads of Petone, and read a list showing th« victories won in football, cricket, shooting, bowling, croquet, rowing, tennis,, and tug-of-war. Eulogistic speeches were, delivered by Mr. Wilford, Dr. Thacker, Dr. Newman, Major Hardham, V.C., Mr. Flaws (president Rifle ClubJ, and Mr. F. C. Evans (League). During the evening musical items were rendered by the Harmonic Society, Mrs. Hept>leton, Mr. Nicholls, and Mr. 'C. Burridge. The hall was then cleared and dancing sviis indulged in.
