THE VESTEY PURCHASE
BLUE STAR LINERS.
Reference was made by the Prime Minister yesterday to the Vestey purj chase of Imperial Government meat in I store in New Zealand. The principal in the purchase, Sir William vestey, is chairman of the Union Cold Storage Company. This company purchased the Blue Star Line last year for £4,342,780, and it consisted of 15 insulated steamersThe company has freezing works in Argentina, Astrakhan, and Hankow. 1 Its store in Liverpool, recently opened, has a cubic capacity of three million feet— the largest cold store in Europe, so it is claimed. , In purchasing last August the business of Eastman's Ltd., the Union Cold Storage Company acquired a huge retail concern with shops largely in London, but in most other big centres of population in the United Kingdom. Four members of the firm of Vestey Brothers are on the board of directors of the Union Cold Storage.
The remains of the late Mr. S. G. Ross were interred in the Karori Cemetery this morning. Requiem Mass was said by the Rev. Father Smyth, S.M., Administrator, at the Sacred Heart Church, Hill-street, in the presence of a numerous congregation, including many representatives of the engraving trade, in which he had occupied a position of high esteem. The chief mourners were Messrs. W. F., J. R., and A. Ross (brothers), P. N. Denton,. and F. J. Oakes (brothers-in-law). The poll-bearers were Messrs. W. Bock, Jan., H. Mayer, Newey/and L, Cimino. The Rev. Father Dignan, S.M., officiated at the graveside. Messrs.- E. Johnston and ,Cb- will hold a salo of furnituro to-morrow. On Monday they will soil carpets. Mossrs. Williams and Co., Ltd., will sell pianos and furnituro at the Auction Arcade to-morrow. .Sir John.Findlay, K.C., returned from Auckland yesterday.
