MARRIAGE "BOOM"

An unprecedented wedding- "boom" oas lately been experienced in Preston, Lancashire (reports the Manchester Guardian), and it culminated on Saturday, 7th August, the opening day of the annual holidays, in a recofd of over 200 marriages. One result was a scramble for taxis and cabs, which were also in great demand for conveying- holiday-makers to the station. All day long the wedding equipages raced through the streets. Instead of waiting at church doors for the parties to come out after the- ceremonies, taxi drivei-6 simply deposited their "fares" and rushed away to fulfil another call, in some cases even two calls, before returning for the fir6t parties It is calculated that three or four times as many couples entered into the matrimonial state on Saturday as on any previous single day in Preston In the first halt of this year, the superintendent registrar states, there were about 1000 marriages, compared with about' 750 in the corresponding half of last year. A distinctly novel reason is given for this "boom " It is the house famine. Couples- have suddenly como to the conclusion that, so far from causing them to wait, it gives them a great chance to get married, because they can live with parents or friends or in lodgings, and so do not need the capital which setting-up house now calls for.
